Labradorite, originating from Labrador in Canada, belongs to the feldspar mineral group, which is abundant in the Earth's crust. However, the optical 'play of colour effect', makes this gemstone so unique and beautiful!
This gem, belongs to the triclinic crystal system and it usually occurs in dark blue, grey or yellowish brown material. It can be either transparent, translucent or opaque. It is commonly found as cabochon cut, because it can better display its optical effect and also it is more durable. It has a hardness of 6 at Moh's scale, making it a fragile material, so great caution should be taken when you wear jewellery with this gemstone. Apart from Labrador in Canada, it can also be found in Australia, Finland, Mexico and Russia. Labradorite is so commonly used in jewellery, because it displays the characteristic 'play of colour' effect. Labradorite consists of intergrown layers of two different types of feldspar (Na-feldspar and Ca-feldspar). When the light reaches its surface and it is reflected back to our eyes, interference colours are produced. These colours are due to the interference between the wavelengths of the white light. Some of the wavelengths interfere with each other whereas some others are cancelled out. The ones that are reflected back to our eyes are the ones that we see. On the photo below you can see a translucent oval cabochon cut labradorite. If you have a closer look you will be able to check the play of colour optical effect.
Many jewellery designers are fascinated by this optical effect and they tend to use this gemstone in their pieces of jewellery.
