Purplish Blue Tanzanite

One of December's birthstones is Tanzanite, the transparent blue variety of zoisite. It is very famous for its strong and magical pleochroism.

Tanzanite has a hardness of 6 and it belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system. It is a brittle material, so it is better if you wear your tanzanite pieces only on special occasions and not everyday. Tanzanite displays a vitreous lustre, thus it is not such a bright gemstone. However, its strong pleochroism, makes it very special! When viewed though the gemmological dichroscope, you can check its trichroic colours, blue, yellow and pink. This is very characteristic of a tanzanite gemstone, so in case your gemstone does not show these colours, then it is not a tanzanite. There is one exception on this rule. If the gemstone is heat-treated then it might display on a violet and blue colour. These are some gemmological secrets, that obviously are not secrets anymore! This phenomenon is depicted on the video below.

A beautiful piece of rough tanzanites is the bracelet shown below, by Abiza jewelry. This bracelet has a 14carats rose gold filled metal and it consists of 23 beautiful violet blue rough tanzanites! As you probably already know, the mutard and crust colour are like the top colours this winter! Tanzanite fits perfectly these two colours and it makes a very pretty colourful outfit! If you own clothes with these colours, you can try it and let me know on the comments box below, if you like it too. As I mentioned above, it is better if you put one your tanzanite jewellery only for special occasions and night outfits, so that you will be sure that your gemstone will not be fractured!
