Lapis Lazuli - Sodalite: Main Differences

Some of you have asked me about the differences between lapis lazuli and sodalite. Check out the list below, hopefully it helps 😉!

Left: Oval Cabochon cut Sodalite / Right: Oval Cabochon cut Lapis Lazuli

1. Sodalite displays a purplish-blue colour, whereas lapis lazuli shows a vivid blue colour.
 2. Sodalite is usually translucent. On the other hand, most of the times, lapis lazuli is seen as an opaque material.
 3. Sodalite lacks in pyrite, which is almost always seen in lapis lazuli. The pyrite presence (meaning the golden coloured inclusions that we see on the photo of lapis lazuli), is a very good indication. So, when you want to buy a gemstone, check its appearance first!
 4. Sodalite shows a veined appearane, whereas lapis lazuli shows a granular structure, because of the varying amounts of calcite, pyrite and other white minerals. This can be better seen under the microscope.

If you have any doubt on what you are buying, you can test your gemstone to a gemmologist and then you will be sure!
