The Coral feeling

Coral is an organic material secreted by animals called coral polyps. Indeed, it is the supporting structure for the body of the polyp, which lives in a rigid skeleton. Other than that, it is used in jewellery and it gives us the summer feeling, more than any other gem!

There are different types of coral, such as precious, soft, fossilized, black and golden coral. In jewellery, we often find the precious coral, which can be white, red, pink and orange. The ridged structure of precious coral is very characteristic, looking like small branching colonies attached to the sea floor.   As you might have noticed, if you already own some coral pieces, it is a very soft material. So, avoid wearing it all day long and keep it away from contact with hairsprays and perfumes, because it is porous and it can be damaged easily. Thus, once you need to wear your coral pieces, they should be the last to add to your outfit.

I really like corals, not only because of their unique origin but also because they present my favourite orange to red colour. This colour is perfect for the summer season! The jewellery suite (earrings and necklace) that you can see below is made with precious and soft coral beads and it can be worn separated as well. For example, the necklace is perfect for a day outfit with a summer dress or even a jeans shorts and a T-shirt. On the other hand, the pair of earrings can add an evening touch on your outfit, especially if you want to go for an evening drink or to a summer event.

In the jewellery market, you can also find some pieces, which combine coral beads with metal decorations, such as the necklace on the picture below. This 3 row necklace can be worn all year long, due to the golden decorations that it has. It will add some extra colour on your outfit and it can fit in many different styles.

In case you want to buy coral jewellery, be careful because in the market there are many treated ones, which are usually stained red or pink and also synthetic ones. The unique structure of coral can help you distinguish between the synthetic and the natural ones. As you can see on the photo below, the branches that I mentionned above and also the fine corrugations that run along the length of branches, should also be seen on the coral beads on your jewellery.

Precious coral will be seen in many jewellery brands around the world this summer, so make sure to choose the one that you like the most!
